2 hand carved exceptional oak and gold gilt altar retables. Details include full relief angels, gothic tracery and two panels depicting the “Sacrifice of Melchisedek,” the story in the Bible when Melchisedek, “priest and king of Salem,” offered Abraham bread and wine and blessed him/ The story is in Genesis 14:18-20. The other one pictures the Israelites gathering up the Manna in the wilderness in the Sinai peninsula after they left Egypt (the Exodus) before they got to the Promised Land (Exodus 16:4-14). Both are seen as a prefiguration of the Eucharist. Melchisedek is called “a priest of the Most High God” – and Catholic priests are called “priests after the order of Melchisedek and the manna is a prefiguration of the Communion hosts.
